The Staggering Results of Cultivating a Fruitful Faith

"Now the parable is this: the seed is the word of God. Those beside the road are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, so that they will not believe and be saved. Those on the rocky soil are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no firm root; they believe for a while, and in time of temptation fall away. The seed which fell among the thorns, these are the ones who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with worries and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to maturity. But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance."
Luke 8:11-15

Good Morning my beloved,

We welcome you to worship today in the name of God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. It's a tremendous privilege to have you here with us today this Lord's Day, reminding me of both the blessing and importance of community and the shared faith that unites us all.

I would also like to invite you to join us in lifting up our brothers and sisters in Christ who are facing high levels of persecution, often risking their lives for their faith in prayer, that their faith would remain unshaken and steadfast, as they continue to bear witness to their persecutors, serving as a powerful testament to the strength and courage that comes from their deep-rooted faith in Christ, evidenced through their attitudes and actions. Additionally, we humbly ask that you would pray that God's Word and this ministry would reach those who are in dire need of spiritual guidance, and the encouragement of God's Word, offering them hope amidst the severe trials and difficult challenges they face, wherever they may be.

We are again blessed with the opportunity to study the marvelous Gospel of Luke, which should inspire a deep sense of gratitude and humility in us all, knowing that we are embraced by such a loving God and compassionate Savior. In our previous message, we talked about the profound reality that we are blessed, privileged to be selected by God, His elect are chosen, before the foundation of the world. I mean that is just a staggering statement, isn't it, that you and I were chosen by God to reveal His great divine Truth. Furthermore, we were chosen to be a part of His glorious kingdom, called to proclaim His Word. What makes this even more intriguing and humbling, is the reality that we are not inherently anymore worthy, any more deserving than anybody else, it's not based on our individual worthiness or our accomplishments, we were chosen despite our many, numerous flaws and imperfections. which adds another layer of wonder to the boundless grace and unconditional love of God.

I have heard that there are some preachers who teach that God loves only His elect and He hates the non-elect. We know that Scripture clearly teaches that God is kind, compassionate, generous, and good even to the most stubborn rebellious sinners, like the apostle Paul, and you and me. The fact that you and I are even here today, is a true testament to the boundless grace and infinite mercy of God, because in Romans 6:23 Paul teaches us, "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

It sounds counterintuitive to say to the wicked and evil sinner that he is chosen by God over the self-righteous religious man, but that is exactly what Jesus is saying in verse 10 when He said, "To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest it is in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand." Those who are in the spiritual kingdom will be in the earthly kingdom and in the eternal kingdom, understanding this magnificent reality should inspire us to live every day for God, humbly serving Him by serving others without hesitation, uttering absolutely no complaints for the rest of our earthly lives, should it not?

The gospel of salvation is such good news that I don't even have enough words to describe all of its wonders and glories. Those of us who have received the precious gift of salvation, understand what it means to have our sins forgiven and our guilt and shame before God removed and the hope in heaven that awaits us. This glorious hope is not just a fleeting feeling but a steadfast anchor for our soul, promising an eternity in the divine presence of God that surpasses all earthly understanding. To delve even deeper into the complexities of this great salvation, consider the transformative power of salvation as it not only affects the individual but can also foster a rippling effect throughout our communities, promoting compassion, kindness, and a spirit of forgiveness.

We could even take it a step further and consider the high levels of volunteerism and various charitable activities, that are driven by the teachings of love and service found in the gospel of salvation. The more we understand just how invaluable this precious gift of salvation is, the more difficult it is for us to understand how anybody could reject it. Personally, I find it impossible to understand, the sheer magnitude of God’s grace alone is so overwhelming, it seems utterly unfathomable to me that anyone could turn down God's forgiveness in exchange for Hell. Yet, despite this, there are countless numbers of individuals who continue to reject Christ and His offer of salvation. The notion of rejecting forgiveness and eternal life in exchange for an eternity that is filled with endless torment and unrelenting torture is beyond my comprehension. In John 3:19-20, Jesus reminds us that "This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed." Then, in verse 21 He says, "But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God."

Let's pray together

Heavenly Father,

Father, we often fall short in conveying the depth of our gratitude for this gift we have received, mere words cannot express how thankful we are for the profound truths and divine wisdom contained in Your Word. Lord, as I reflect upon my own salvation, I can't help but to become overwhelmed, deeply moved with emotion for the condemnation and eternal judgment that awaits those who will depart from this world even today without having embraced Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, I confess such a daunting fate grieves my spirit terribly. Father, I pray that You would instill in the heart of every individual who is receiving this message, the importance of spreading the Gospel to ensure that more souls find refuge in Your boundless grace, endless mercies, and unceasing love, thus averting the dire condemnation that looms for the unrepentant sinner, or those who are misled by self-deception into believing they are saved. Lord, I pray that You would use me to that end for Your glory and for Christ's sake. In His precious Name we ask and pray
Amen.

Today's Message: The Staggering Results of Cultivating a Fruitful Faith

Open your Bibles with me, if you would and turn them to the Gospel of Luke chapter 8, Luke 8:11-15. If you would follow along with me as I read, we can set the text in our minds, as we delve into the text, allowing it to settle deeply within our hearts, so let's take this opportunity to listen for what the Spirit of God has to personally say to each of us today through the Word and allow it to transform our lives.

In verse 9, Jesus' disciples began questioning Him about the meaning behind the parable He had just shared, here in beginning in verse 11, He begins explaining the parable's significance, layer by layer; those whose hearts are open and believe will be rewarded in abundance, they will be granted a deeper understanding and a greater wealth of spiritual insight. However, those who have rejected Jesus Christ and His teaching, are never going to know divine truth, because even what they have will eventually be stripped away from them. Their choice to reject Christ and dismiss the teachings will lead to an intensified form of divine judgment, which will further distance them from the Truth. This concept is further supported by the parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-30, where those who do not utilize their spiritual gifts and understanding in accordance with His divine will, will find themselves losing even the little they have, underscoring that the Greek verb "akouō" used meaning "to hear," is closely related to the verb "hypakouō." meaning "to obey. There's no point in trying to give spiritual truth to those who have no ability to grasp it.

I have discovered throughout my many years of extensive reading and studying God's Word, the more diligently I pursue the deeper meanings of God's Truth, the more understanding He graciously unveils to me. It recently dawned on me that the good news is I'm never going to run out of truth to teach, I'm just going to run out of time in which to teach it. So, each and every moment God graciously continues to sustain my life becomes an opportunity to impart the wisdom I have acquired. There's no point in trying to give spiritual truths to those who have no ability to grasp it. Moreover, it cannot be forced upon individuals who actively reject it.

It's like Jesus said in Matthew 7:6, where Jesus emphasizes the futility of trying to enlighten individuals who are either indifferent or would not appreciate such sacred spiritual truths,  it will not only result in the message being disregarded but could also provoke a negative reaction. "Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces." Just as pearls represent the precious and valuable Word of God, spiritual truths will only hold immense significance for those who are prepared to receive them. For those who metaphorically trample them under their feet, they lose their intended spiritual value and potential transformative effect. In a manner similar to the situation with Pharaoh, his decision not to believe, repeatedly rejected the signs and warnings given to him, a personal choice that lead to God's decision to harden his heart, further increasing his lack of capacity to comprehend and accept spiritual Truths.

I've come to the realization that even many individuals who claim to be devout followers of Christ often fail to grasp the immense significance of such a profound privilege that accompanies true salvation. This lack of understanding can often lead to the superficial worship practices that are performed out of habit, which have become alarmingly prevalent in the church today, such individuals miss the transformative potential for personal growth and spiritual development that genuine faith can offer those who are willing to deeply engage Christ's teachings, grasping their significance, ultimately embarking on a more authentic and fulfilling spiritual journey. I fail to understand why more people do not dedicate their lives to the study and understanding of the Holy Scriptures, it seems evident that they do not fully comprehend what a tremendous privilege has been granted to them, to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God.

Let's look at verse 11, "Now the parable is this: the seed is the word of God." The phrase "The seed is the Word of God" fundamentally refers to the gospel, specifically the gospel message about salvation. This seed is essentially the good news about how individuals can gain entry into the divine kingdom of God. It's the message about salvation, regarding forgiveness, reconciliation, justification, sanctification, and ultimately, glorification.

People often say to me, "Well, I'm not that deeply versed in the Bible and what I know, I'm not very good at articulating that to others, what should I say if I go out evangelizing?" I always respond with a very critical question them to consider, and that is, "Are you a Christian? If the answer is "Yes," and if you have assurance and conviction of being a genuine believer, then you inherently possess enough sufficient knowledge to tell someone else about the gospel and guide them towards salvation. The process isn't any more complicated than that. More often than not, sharing one's own personal testimony is a highly effective way to evangelize others, it's actually one of the most significant tools used in influencing others to explore Christianity. Your personal journey and the transformative impact of the gospel in your life can be incredibly compelling.

Evangelizing is not about having an exhaustive theological education; it's about sharing the transformative power of the gospel as you have experienced it. As long as you communicate the core truths of the gospel you are planting the seeds of salvation. Proclaiming the gospel of salvation is about loving people enough to tell them the truth. And when it is given in love, with the hope of restoring one who is lost, that's not an act of cruelty, it's not hate speech, it is love. As I've stated many times, we're are not called to go around being mean to sinners, we’re not called to stage protests or riot!  Evangelizing is more about sincerity and authenticity than it is about perfect delivery. If that were the case no one would ever come to Christ, we're all flawed. The apostle Paul summed it up in Romans 3:23 when he said, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."

In Matthew 28, we are all commanded to "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you." So, we sow the seed of the gospel, telling people the Good News, that God loves people enough to send His Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross, paying the penalty of the sins for the who will believe on His Name, and embrace it; meaning everything He said in the gospel. The gospel doesn't end with Jesus' death; He was buried and, on the third day, rose again, triumphing over death. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the cornerstone of our Christian faith, symbolizing the promise of eternal life granted to believers. You were saved because the Word of God did its work in your life. And we are called to imperfectly tell people about this wonderful news on a massive scale, one person at a time.

Verse 12, "Those beside the road are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, so that they will not believe and be saved." This verse serves as a cautionary warning, highlights the vulnerability of those who hear the gospel but do not deeply embrace it's message. It emphases the importance of not only receiving knowledge about salvation, but carefully nurturing it within oneself to ensure it takes root and flourishes. I cannot stress enough how critical this is in a fallen world with all of its many constant distractions and competing ideologies, that can dilute the impact of the gospel messages if one does not consciously make the effort to read, study and meditate on God's Word and abide by His teaching, ultimately leading to a more profound and enduring belief. In Matthew 24:12-13, Jesus said, "Because lawlessness is increased, most people’s love will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end, he will be saved."

The problem is that many people believe in Christ, but He's not the Lord of their life, He's not the ruling Authority. They believe in Jesus but Jesus does not believe in them. Their faith is superficial, there's no genuine repentance, there’s no hunger and thirst for righteousness. Listen as I read John 2:22-25, "So when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He said this; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken. Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name, observing His signs which He was doing. But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, for He knew all men, and because He did not need anyone to testify concerning man, for He Himself knew what was in man." Do you understand? You can't fix the seed to make it more palatable.

Jesus has no belief in their belief, no faith in their faith, and no trust in their trust in Him. He knows it's superficial, because He knows what was in man. You might fool me, you might fool the entire church, but you 're not fooling Jesus, He knows your heart. You must genuinely engage your heart, that is essential for salvation. You can listen to every message I've ever preached, and I hope that you do, but understand I’m merely a tool, the messenger that God is using to bring you to salvation. I can't make you engage with what I'm saying, I can't make you believe the message, that's a supernatural work of God, that's the new birth. To use a very familiar part of evangelical lingo, "You must be born-again." The why I proclaim the gospel week after week, so that you will believe that and in believing that have eternal life. The goal is genuine salvation, faith that will endure to the end, abiding in God's Word. The purpose of sowing the gospel message so thar people can believe and be saved, if you're not willing to be honest with yourself about the spiritual condition of your heart, you better get on your knees before God and plead with Him to soften your heart and grant you repentance.

For decades and decades, modern evangelists have been telling people "If you just pray this prayer, you're born again." And then they say something like "If you just prayed this prayer, welcome to the family of God." True salvation is wholly a work of God, genuine new birth happens to us, it does not happen by us. You didn't have anything to do with your natural birth, you made no contribution, and you can make no contribution to your spiritual new birth, it isn’t something you inherit. I’ve been telling people for years and years, those who are truly born-again are given new life. It's like hitting the reset button, by deleting your entire present life, and beginning all over again. Believing it’s not sufficient faith. James 2:19, tells us even demons believe, right? And, they shudder, because they understand Who God is. The Greek verb "phrissó" conveys a sense of being deeply affected by something, being in awe of someone divine.

Verse 13, "Those on the rocky soil are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no firm root; they believe for a while, and in time of temptation fall away." There are a lot of people that when they hear the gospel, they experience an intense emotional reaction in the moment, sometimes even to the point of tears. It’s almost a feeling of euphoria that comes from a sense of acceptance and belonging, a response often characteristic of what can only be described as a false sense of salvation. While such reactions can be powerful, it is not enough to ensure there's been a deep, transformative understanding of the message. A positive and enthusiastic experience, should not be interpreted as an indication of a lasting change, most often the feeling is temporary, and therefore means nothing from the standpoint of being reconciled with God because there is no solid root to sustain their faith, and so their faith does not withstand the trials and temptations of life.

I believe that as Christians, we must learn to recognize that God often entrusts us with the important task of preparing and nurturing the spiritual ground in the lives of certain individuals around us, cultivating the spiritual soil their people's hearts, so the Word of God can truly take root, grow and flourish. This responsibility extends well beyond merely sharing the Gospel, it involves continuous spiritual support through the building of ongoing meaningful relationships, investing time and dedicating effort into their lives, engaging with them genuinely. It moves from telling them about our faith to equipping them with the necessary tools to withstand the various trials and tribulations life presents, that not only strengthens their resilience, but teaches them how to handle difficult situations and challenges by demonstrating to them through our own living testament to the power of unwavering faith. This approach requires us to be present in their lives on a consistent basis as well as challenges us to extend ourselves beyond simply communicating our beliefs verbally to actively embodying them, by demanding that we put them into practice, fostering an environment where spiritual growth can flourish, essential for reinforcing the integrity of our own faith. Ultimately ensuring that our faith is not only just spoken words about the transformative power of Gospel, but a lived experience that has the potential to influence and enrich the lives of both ourselves as well as those around us who are silently watching.

Verse 14, "The seed which fell among the thorns, these are the ones who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with worries and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to maturity." The seed falling among the thorns serves as a profound warning for those who hear the Word of God but allow themselves to become overwhelmed by the myriad distractions and temptations of the modern world. While I am committed to conveying the divine Truth of God, which has the power to bring about genuine transformation in people's lives, this process that cannot be forced, it's ultimately up to the Holy Spirit to do the work within each individual to prepare their hearts to receive and embrace it.

I recognize that despite being exposed to God's Word, Satan continually strives to create  "thorny" barriers in people's lives through the constant distractions, interruptions and temptations of daily life, whether the pursuit of material wealth, and the allure of worldly pleasures, these obstacles can ultimately hinder the transforming process and limit the ability to manifest meaningful spiritual growth and bear the mature fruits of faith.

Our greatest enemy is not the church down the street, in the next town, or even across the country, it is the Christian superficially attached to Jesus, sitting next to us in the pew, who may outwardly appear to be devout and committed followers of Christ, yet their actions and attitudes frequently contradict the very biblical teachings and principles they claim to uphold. Subtly exhibiting behaviors that have the potential to be detrimental to the Body of Christ, causing considerable damage to the spiritual well-being of the congregation, especially for those who are new to the faith, struggling to reconcile the gap between what they are being taught and the behaviors they are observing. By cultivating a toxic environment of distrust which can lead to divisions, internal conflicts and hypocrisy rather than an atmosphere that strives towards unity with all members and encourages spiritual growth and the embodiment of Christ's teachings. We've all had to deal with people like that at one time or another, who go around gossiping, spreading rumors to anyone willing to lend an ear and often speak ill of us to other members of the congregation, all while professing to be a devout Christian. In fact, recently I have found myself having to personally confront this very disheartening situation, where someone whom I love and considered a close member of my spiritual family was engaging in negative behavior that was not only hypocritical but also damaging to the overall community and trust that is supposed to be the foundation of the Body of Christ. Sometimes, there are just impurities in heart, unresolved bitterness,  resentment and unforgiveness.

This experience has served as a powerful reminder of the importance of addressing such conduct with grace, mercy and forgiveness, preserving my own personal integrity, while upholding the core Christian values and biblical principles, relying on Christ for inspiration, Whose teachings by example, emphasized choosing the path of forgiveness, with a heart full of compassion and understanding, that leads to healing and reconciliation. The more you get to know a person the more you begin to see the evidence of whether or not their life has truly been transformed by the way they deal with various situations and respond to the challenges that life inevitably throws their way. Being a true Christian not only involves having attitude fruit, but action fruit. In James 1:22, he says "But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves."

Some people are really good at deceiving themselves and others, consumed with their own emotional needs; they talk a lot about God, yet exhibit minimal or no genuine commitment to embodying the teachings of Jesus Christ in their daily lives. The discrepancy between their words and their actions renders their professions of faith meaningless. Words without action don't mean anything nor does action without attitude, that's legalism.

Therefore, I am convinced that it is crucial for church leaders to address these issues head-on, engaging with the congregation openly and honestly, in a way that not only acknowledges these challenges but takes steps toward actively seeking solutions that the entire community can work towards together, by encouraging regular open forums for discussion giving members a platform where they can voice their concerns, also providing resources necessary to promote the manifestation of spiritual fruit, both within each individual and the Body, so that the church can collectively aspire to be the pillar of Truth, becoming the beacon of hope for the lost and a formidable source of strength and support for all believers, fulfilling its original purpose, setting a precedent for others in the community to follow.

That brings us to verse 15, "But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance." This verse highlights the significance of being like the seed being sown on fertile ground, where individuals are those who have genuinely embraced the message with sincerity and integrity of heart. These individuals not only cling to its teachings but also demonstrate its transformative power.

Anyone who genuinely has a true love for God, will invariably find that love to be intertwined with a profound love for the Word of God, a connection that becomes apparent through the visible manifestations of 'fruit' in one's life. The Apostle Paul provides us with a clear, vivid depiction of the fruit of the Spirit in his letter to the Galatians, in chapter 5:22-23, which is "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; emphasizing that against such things there is no law." These Christian characteristics are not just abstract ideals but are vital principals meant to be actively cultivated and embraced in the life of every true believer. Jesus said in John 15:2, "Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit." Listen, if there is no 'fruit' being produced in your life, it's not because of the sower or there's an issue the seed, the problem is the condition of your heart.

As long as there are metaphorical 'weeds' lurking in your heart, these negative influences and toxic thoughts that are hindering your personal growth, such as harboring feelings of resentment or jealousy, or unforgiveness will inevitably take root and grow, skewing your moral compass, thereby making it difficult for you to experience the full transformative power of God's Word. It is therefore, essential to not only recognize these detrimental elements but actively work to remove them from your life, ultimately producing the desired results of peace, spiritual fulfillment, and purpose in your life.

May it be so..

And now may the Lord bless you and keep you;

the Lord make His face shine upon you,

And be gracious to you;

The Lord lift up His countenance upon you,

And give you peace.

Now and forever, in Jesus' name

Amen

You Can't Quarantine The Word of God
